Key Takeaways from HotSchedules Spark 2017
If you were at HotSchedules’ 2017 Spark Conference, you know that it provided a wonderful forum for learning management and development leaders from across the industry. The jam-packed event was an opportunity to bring together faces both familiar and brand new for two days of networking, collaboration, and insight exchange. Dare we say… the conference SPARKed (see what we did there?) fresh perspectives on the challenges and opportunities shared by our customers and their peers. That’s the true value in these events — to reconnect with old friends, make new ones and, together, drive success. And if you weren’t able to make it, don’t worry. We hope this recap inspires you to join us in 2018!
The HotSchedules team truly kicked off the conference with a bang, unveiling our revolutionary next-generation restaurant technology: Clarifi.
Clarifi is the first cloud-based intelligent restaurant operating platform specifically designed to help restaurant operators, managers, and their teams prepare and perform in the face of the unpredictable. The system comprises five modules, each designed to solve the people, product and operational challenges faced by every restaurant, every day.
And we were particularly thrilled to discuss our learning management module, Clarifi Talent Development. It’s the same great learning and performance management system you use now with a vision for more integrations to the rest of the Clarifi platform in 2018. As a learning and development professional, your experience with the software won’t change but the benefits and insights your team gains will improve across the Clarifi modules.
All of this excitement paved the way for our first breakout session, focused on Learning and Development’s role in Change Management. Our fabulous panelists shared their experiences, the obstacles they faced, and tips for leading Change Management. Not always an easy task!
1. Constant Communication is Key
The key takeaway was this: in order to manage big changes in your business, you MUST communicate with Change Agents across all departments. Build relationships with the people who will be helping to implement those changes, repeat your message to them and make sure that everyone is marching to the beat of the same drum. That constant communication will keep everybody on the same page and help amplify the benefits to key stakeholders. (NOTE: Attendance and audience participation was so high we plan on hosting a webinar on the topic in Q1 to reach a broader audience.)
2. Turning Managers into Leaders
The next learning and development session focused on helping to attract, retain and coach managers, one of Spark’s major themes. Our panelists discussed keeping managers engaged and developing them as leaders. From rolling out MIT courses and communicating regularly to helping managers build and retain their own teams, the panel shared advice, goals and the keys to their success.
3. Performance Management
While communication was again one of the most important factors in helping train and engage managers, the idea of performance management also came up repeatedly. It’s vital to have a transparent process through which employees can grow at your business — in other words, from the very first interview, you’ll want to make it clear to employees: how to progress, the skills required for promotions, the steps to take in order to achieve those goals. Some panelists had their performance management process down to a science, and others had made it a goal to implement in 2018.
If you’re inconsistent with skills and competencies you seek when hiring, it can create problems. But learning and development solutions can fill gaps and prevent issues before they even start. The risks of not agreeing on the skills and competencies you want to hire for often open up an opportunity for L&D to fill the gaps and fix a problem that could have been avoided. There were tons of ideas shared, and insight into how Clarifi Talent Development can be used to streamline and measure this process.
The conversation segued into our 2017 year-to-date product updates and the 2018 vision for Clarifi Talent Development. We will be hosting our quarterly product webinar in November to share the same demo with a wider audience, and we will take a look back to highlight product updates with a Year in Review in December. Be sure to look for those invites in your inbox!
And where is the HotSchedules Talent Development team headed next? CHART! We hope to see you in San Antonio this coming February for more great networking and collaboration!
