This last spring semester, HotSchedules was fortunate enough to find a great marketing intern who was finishing up her degree at UT. May Ann is bright, creative, engaged, mature, an excellent communicator – I could go on and on. I tried to be a decent manager to her – I figure I’ll be working for her one day.
Fortunately for her, but not so much for me, she found a full-time gig in her home town, and her last day was last week. I miss her already. In parting, she gave us this great blog post, and I’m happy to share it…
In the short span that I was with HotSchedules, I realized that the company has found the secret to success. What’s the secret, you ask? Brace yourself. What you’re about to read is classified information…
Secret #1 – expertise. Everyone at HotSchedules really knows the products. They also know the industry. The products were developed by restaurateurs for restaurants. They’ve walked in the shoes of the people they’re serving. You know that throbbing headache that goes along with scheduling and labor management? They know it better than anyone. That’s why they’ve developed the best aspirin for it.
Secret #2 – passion. Not only does everyone understand the products, they really BELIEVE in what the products can do for restaurant managers and employees. That’s what wakes them up and makes them _want _to come in to work. They’re serious about making people’s lives easier and they love doing it. And boy, are they passionate about service. They strive to create the best possible experience for their customers and each other.
Secret #3 – family. HotSchedules is passionate about work culture, too. Everyone really cares about each other. “Work smarter. Together.” isn’t just a bunch of words plastered to paper – it’s the heart of the company. I’d have to say it’s the most important piece to creating sustainable success. Treat your people like people and see how employee productivity, innovation, sales, and service change for the better. And family doesn’t stay contained inside their little office building – it extends to customers. The HotSchedules team loves it when they hear how much HotSchedules has made a difference in their lives. And they take that responsibility to customers seriously. They highly value the feedback they get about products and features because some of the best ideas come from the people who are using them in restaurants every day.
Secret #4 – fun. While they’re serious about each other and the products, they don’t take themselves too seriously. That’s why the executives cook for the entire team once a month. And why they have ping pong tournaments. And why a day of team building equals a day of bowling, laser tagging, and rock climbing. Confucius said, “Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.” They love what they do and they have fun doing it.
There you have it. Some of the ingredients to the HotSchedules’ company Kool-Aid. Drink up and go create great culture in your workplace.
