Each quarter at HotSchedules, we recognize an employee who’s been going above and beyond to do outstanding work for our customers — we call it our “Keepin’ it Hot” award, and this time around, the honor goes to the amazing Amy Castner. Check out our interview with Amy to get to know her better, and be sure to come back to the blog as we’ll be introducing you to a different HotSchedules employee every month!
*What is your role at HotSchedules, and what does your day-to-day workload entail? *
I’m a Support Services Technician, so I field support calls and emails, troubleshoot and investigate issues for clients. The majority of the cases I work with involves training our users on proper use of the software.
How long have you been at the company?
I have been at HotSchedules for one year as of August.
*What was your professional or academic experience before HotSchedules? *
I have a BS in Communications from the University of Texas with a focus on Radio, TV and Film production. I have a pretty varied professional background, which includes having worked as Executive Assistant in Development at a TV production company in Hollywood, as Sales and Acquisitions for Web services in the Real Estate industry, and as Director of Operations/Producer/Editor for a small HD Video Production Company in San Diego. Oh, and I was an assistant manager at Amy’s Ice Creams and a server at Scholz’ Biergarten, too. 😉
*What does winning the Keepin’ it Hot award mean to you? *
It means a lot. This award is decided upon by the executives at the company. There are a great deal of employees here who put their heart and soul into their work, so I have stiff competition for the award. I feel honored to have been recognized for this.
What do you feel makes HotSchedules’ company culture most unique?
HotBall – NOBODY else in the world has HotBall. And the people! Unique people make for a unique company culture.
*What is the silliest thing you love about working at HotSchedules? *
Snacks for a quarter! (esp. Famous Amos cookies!) and Jaime Salas – he can be pretty silly.
*What would be your #1 tip for any HotSchedules user? *
Read the new employee welcome sheet – it’s VERY informative.
*Do you have any personal experience working in the restaurant industry? If so, any stories that stick in your mind? *
When I worked at Scholz’ we used to host UT home games which would be broadcast on the radio. Matthew McConaughey used to show up to these shindigs. One day he was there and I was bussing my tables. I turned a corner and nearly ran into him – I looked up and met his face – the guy was 3 sheets to the wind with his eyes fully glazed over and he absolutely reeked of beer. Not too interesting a story, really.
If you could spend a week anywhere in the world, where would you go?
Mountains, in the middle of the ocean or an island where there is no internet or cell phone coverage. In other words, in nature somewhere away from modern means of communication.
*Where is your favorite place you’ve ever lived or traveled, and why? *
The Netherlands: beautiful scenery and architecture and the NICEST people in the entire world. I was looking at a map lost and someone actually came up to me and asked if they could help me find something. Wow – they’re not like that in Germany, that’s for sure.
You’re at karaoke, and you’re up next: What do you pick?
Ghostbusters – who you gonna call?
What’s the last movie you saw?
Rented The Blindside recently – I have a 4-year old so I don’t see movies much anymore.
*What was the last great book you read (or are currently reading)? *
The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle – most excellent, excellent book
What website is at the top of your favorites list?
Actually, I often peruse my sister’s photography website – she takes beautiful pics of people (including a ton of her kids and they’re so fun to look through!) annazatopek.com I swear this is not a plug.
It’s midnight on Saturday: What are you most likely doing?
Either sleeping, editing videos or playing music with my husband.
*What’s one thing – aside from your clothes, keys, phone, and wallet – that you never leave home without? *
Well, I do leave my home without my keys, phone and wallet sometimes. I would say besides these, I never leave home without grabbing a few extra kisses from my baby girl!
Congratulations, Amy, we are lucky to have you.
